Cafe Alex

Cafe Alex is an interesting little spot. Walking distance from our accommodation we decided to have breakfast here before flying out of Vietnam – and I’m glad we did.

Situated in an unassuming little corner they serve the usual Vietnamese drinks menu but the owner Chris (Alex is his son) is a British expat with exacting standards for his food. His mantra seems to be “if it’s not good enough, our customers will notice!”

The food menu here is brought out on request and has a limited but exciting line-up. AFC (Alex Fried Chicken), British big breakfast, bangers and mash, fish and chips and Sunday roast (served only on Sunday by pre-order) are just a few of the dishes that I can recall from this particular visit. The menu deserves top to bottom exploration.

The big breakfast gets real, imported British sausage and non-streaky bacon (apparently the British prefer it this way) and the AFC features real mashed potatoes and a coleslaw the likes of which I haven’t had since… ever. The fried chicken is delicious yet in no way an imitation of that found at a popular fast-food franchise.

From what we could gather Cafe Alex serves authentic British comfort food without cutting corners. A must visit as far as I’m concerned next time we’re back in town!
